Euphorbia ingens.  Euphorbia ingens

This is an interesting plant from South Africa, which is their equivalent to a cereus cactus, capable of growing to 30 or 40 feet in a thick upright head of stems. It has little yellow flowers at the nodes which are characteristic of the Euphorbia genus.

It is rare in New Zealand and is marginal as an outdoor plant, able to withstand only 1 or 2 degrees of frost without any damage, but this may be due to our wet winters. The big frost of June 1994 ( a one in 50 year frost) took out the growing tips and the tips of the upper ribs on our plant, but thankfully it resprouted a proliferation of shoots. This has enabled a few cuttings to be taken in November 1998.
